Films From the End of the Line
The “abstract” program includes a wonderful mixture of techniques and approaches—from Britta Johnson’s delicate animation of lace birds to Gretchen Hogue’s aggressive explosion of montage madness; from Matt McCormick’s manipulated assemblage film weaving frenetic abstraction into the mundane, to Matt Daniels’ quiet story of a young boy and a bicycle told through beautifully clean stop-motion images. The common thread in these films is their sense of wonder and their playful hand-crafting. But it is the “documentary” program, with its meditative portraits of place and inquiries into transient life, which perhaps illuminates the Northwest aesthetic best. I am pleased that these creative expressions from the far corner of the Americas are now traveling the globe. While these 16 little films from the Pacific Northwest certainly express a sense of their region of origin, they have less to do with American culture as they do with the human endeavor and the individual spirit.”

-Peter Lucas, Seattle International Film Festival

Lokomotiva, with its media arts program, is presenting Northwest Film Forums selection of films from the Pacific Northwest. Biljana Tanurovska, manager of Lokomotiva, presented a program of Macedonian films in Seattle in 2002 when she was an ArtsLink fellow. Hanagan and Tanurovska met in Seattle when worked together on the production of a documentary film. They are continuing and expanding their collaboration through this exchange with Lokomotiva and Northwest Film Forum by including the work of other artists, programmers and creators.

Dave Hanagan is the Studio Director of Northwest Film Forum (a Seattle-based film arts organization), where he manages the education programs, filmmaking equipment facilities and grant programs. He also serves as the festival director for the Local Sightings Film Festival. Since 1997, Dave has written and directed numerous short films. His work has received many grants, awards and residencies worldwide. Additionally, he has worked as a cinematographer, gaffer, editor and producer on over 50 independent, artistic media projects.

This project is made possible by sponsorship from CEC ArtsLink.
